Vampires have come a long way from their folklore origins as dumb, mute and zombie like creatures – blood thirsty, but not very bright! These old-time vampires are sort of a cross between “Frankenstein” and “Night of the Living Dead.” A folklore type vampire costume would consist of zombie like, peasant clothing (old – tattered and slightly earth soiled), coupled with pale face, blood trickle at the corner of the mouth and of course the characteristic vampire teeth. You could also spruce it up a little, with a fake stake in the center of the chest (over the heart area).

The next major style in vampire attire is that popularized by Bram Stoker, the “Victorian vampire.” This is the classic Gothic style popularized in the Dracula movies. Basically this is a much more elegant dress style, where the vampires come from the upper echelon of society. These are well dressed nobility, ladies and gentlemen of the 19th century, with a penchant for blood sucking. Not only are these vampires much better dressed, they are also sexy, super intelligent and possess both sophistication and super powers. These ladies and gentleman of darkness are the perfect evil anti-heroes. This vampire style is what we traditionally see at Halloween, dark suit or long dress, black cape, sensuous, but evil smile and long white fangs. Don’t forget the pale complexion, blood spatter and hypnotic eyes!

Finally, enter the modern vampire era, as characterized in contemporary film and literature, the “Twilight Vampire.” This vampire teen is young and hot. Like a blood sucking “James Dean”, these middle class, suburban vampires are rebels, hard and lean. Males wear casual jeans, tee shirts, blood smeared lips and very pale skin. Piercing black contacts and bronze colored hair complete the ensemble, giving it a blood deprived edginess. Another look requires long disheveled blond hair, long sleeve white tee shirt, black pants, black shoes and plenty of attitude (don’t forget the fangs, blood and super pale skin).
For the ladies, a long blond wig, either straight or curly, light bay ruffled baby doll top, layered with a white lacy top and skull and cross bones necklace. Finally, bright red lipstick, big loop earrings and bright yellow contacts. Another variation would be a black pixie cut wig, little black dress with red jacket, black leather boots with choker and bangles. Top it off with red lipstick, yellow or gold contacts and an air of confidence!
