What exactly is so scary about the vampire? Many would say it’s the fact that they have returned from the grave to feed their bloodlust upon the living. The original vampires of Eastern European folklore were hideous looking creatures, half corpse surrounded in black shroud like capes. These monsters looked more dead than alive and featured prominent fangs, blood spattered lips and a white skin pallor, fresh from the grave. Typically, they also had long fingernails and shrunken, almost skull like facial features.

The ghoul-like original vampires were superseded by the Gothic vampire of Victorian legend. These vampires were more sophisticated, better dressed and a little better fed than their ancestors. Nonetheless they were equally creepy and powerfully evil. These creatures of the night are all about stealth and eternal damnation. As with the original vampire, they are eager to sink their extra long fangs into the necks of the living. Their skin is pale and bloodless, their lips are full and bloodied. This vampire will either tear his living victims to pieces killing them instantly, or drain them of blood repeatedly over time, so that they may die slowly and thus pass on the curse of vampirism to a new recruit. Gothic vampires of either sex should wear a black cape and should dress more formally, sort of like a Victorian undertaker.

Enter the modern vampire, young and sexy, part goth, part rockstar, with a terrible secret. Though stylish, this vampire also features the dreaded fangs, pale skin and occasionally yellow cat like eyes. This vampire could be your next door neighbor or your worst nightmare. There is something strange about them, but you can’t quite put your finger on it.

So, the must have scary vampire Halloween accessories include fangs – you must have these prominent canine teeth. Next, you will need pale facial powder or paint, to give yourself the creepy skin color of the undead. The third basic is some fake blood for your lips and corner of your mouth. Perhaps a little bit on your fangs too, if you’ve just eaten. Another nice Halloween vampire accessory is a wooden stake to be worn on the chest, you could be the one that escaped the vampire hunters.

There are few more popular anti-heros than “Dracula” the “prince of darkness.” Popularized first in the Victorian novel of the same name, by Bram Stoker, Dracula’s immense popularity as a costume character for Halloween is unsurpassed! You could classify Dracula as a sort of “Super Anti-Hero.”

If you recall from the book, Dracula, the vampire count, has a variety of super powers.These include the ability to shape-shift, or change into into various animals, telepathy (can communicate and control humans with his mind and will), he has achieved relative immortality (at least during the hours of darkness) and he has hypnotic power over the opposite sex. Who could ask for anything more?

Besides his super powers, or maybe because of them, Dracula is a very scary entity. In fact, he is terrifying. His blood- lust and creepy lifestyle (sleeping in a coffin, for example) make him the last thing in the world you want to run into on a dark and foggy night – unless of course, it happens to be Halloween!

Looking for a great Halloween 2009 party idea? Go no further, consider the “Vampire’s Ball” for a truly unforgettable and memorable event. This is a formal gala affair, with lots of sophisticated and seductive Gothic ladies and gentleman all with rather long teeth and an insatiable thirst for blood!

Perhaps you remember the old 1960′s Hammer Studios Film? The young English newlyweds, circa 1890s, are traveling across Europe by horse-drawn coach on their honeymoon. Of course, their route happens to take them through mysterious and foggy Transylvania. While stopped at the local Inn for an extended layover, they receive an invitation to a Masked Ball from a local nobleman, to be held at his castle that very night. Overwhelmed and flattered by such a gracious invitation, the young couple, dressed in their finest Victorian party clothing, proceed to the faraway castle aboard the Count’s very own carriage,  dispatched to the inn to pick them up.

The Ball is a splendid affair, with an orchestra playing, couples dancing in their finest Victorian era party attire (and of course their ornate party masks), wonderful food and drink. The charming, aristocratic Count graciously interacts with his guests, meeting and greeting them with an air of power and sophistication. He seems especially charming and attentive to the young English bride, in spite of her husband’s obvious discomfort.

At the stroke of midnight – the masks are removed! The revelers are all exposed as vampires beneath their party masks. The count sweeps the young wife off her feet and carries her off for a little blood letting, while the young Englishman barely escapes with his life, unfortunately, minus his pretty young wife.

As a theme for a Halloween party this could be awesome. The variety of different vampire costumes and persona’s could make this fun to plan, as well. A real Gothic bash, where something especially creepy and sinister is revealed at midnight. The Gothic undead really know how to party – surprise!

Gothic Vampira

Since the emergence of the Victorian classic, “Dracula” by Bram Stoker, the Gothic vampire has been associated with sex. This Gothic vampire is fantastically seductive, with unlimited power over humans, who are unable to resist it’s hypnotic charms. On the other hand, the vampire is irresistibly attracted to the beauty and innocence of attractive humans, who must be pursued, corrupted and discarded.

In the novel, Dracula is surrounded by a veritable harem of beautiful, available, but discarded vampiresses, all of which he ignores in his pursuit of his newest human conquest. It has long been asserted that the vampire was a symbol and expression of forbidden sexuality in the sexually repressive Victorian era in England.

So seduction and sexiness is definitely part of the vampire’s appeal and should likewise be part of the Gothic vampire costume. Sexy vampire costumes come in child, teen, adult and adult plus sizes. A few of these are featured in the costume links on the sidebar.
